Hefei
is an
ancient city with a history of more than 2000 years. As early as 206
B.C. or so, between Qin and Han Dynasties, Hefei County was established
and was put under the jurisdiction of Jiujiang Prefecture. In the Sui
Dynasty (581-618), it was turned into the Prefecture of Luzhou with
Hefei as the seat of the government, which had spanned the Tang, Song,
Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Therefore, Luzhou is the another name of
Hefei. On January 21, 1949, Hefei was liberated and turned into a city
on February 1 of the same year and designated as the capital city of
Anhui Province in 1952.
Hefei, which has
an area of 7,266 sq km and a population of 4.11 million, has three
counties and four districts under its jurisdiction. Its urban area is
458 sq km with a population of 1.19 million. It is now the political,
economic, cultural and financial center of Anhui Province. An open city
approved by the State Council and one of the financial open cities,
Hefei is also a major science and education base, and a future hub of
railway transportation.
Hefei's economy
has been developing rapidly since it was liberated and especially since
the policy of reform and opening up was initiated in 1979. In 1992,
Hefei ranked 26th among the country's top 50 cities in terms of
economic strength. It has 31 industrial sectors including machinery,
metallurgy, electronics, chemicals, power, light and building
materials. Its household appliances industry mainly produces
refrigerators, washing machines and TV sets; its machinery industry
produces automobiles, forklift trucks, grabs, complete sets of power
distribution and transformation equipment; its chemical industry
produces tires and daily-use articles and its building materials
industry produces new-type building materials. In 1992, it was approved
by the State Council as an open city.
The economic development zones in Hefei include: the Hefei National
High and New Technological Industrial Development Zone; the
Hefei Economic and Technological Development Zone;
and The New Railway Station Development Zone.
