Macau - Getting There

Macau is situated on the Southeast coast of China, bordering Guangdong Province, just 60km from Hong Kong and 145km from Guangzhou.  It is served by direct flights to Macau International Airport, and can be accessed by land from neighbouring Chinese cities, and by air and sea from Hong Kong.
 
Macau covers a total area of 28.2km, and is comprised of the Macau Peninsula (where the Macau Grand Prix Guia street circuit is located), the islands of Taipa and Coloane and the reclaimed area COTAI.
 
By Air

Getting to Macau

By Air

 
 

Helicopters

East Asia Airlines and Heli Express Limited co-operates aircraft between the helipads on the Macau and Hong Kong Ferry terminals. Each flight takes only approximately 16 minutes. Macau to Hong Kong service operates from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and the Hong Kong to Macau service operates from 9:30 a.m. to 10:59 p.m.

The helicopter service between Macau Ferry Terminal and Shenzhen Baoan International Airport, PRC is also provided. The journey takes about 15 minutes at day and approximately 25 minutes at night . Macau to Shenzhen service operates at 9:45 a.m., 1:15 p.m., 2:45 p.m., 4:45 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. and the Shenzhen to Macau service operates at 11:45 a.m., 1:45 p.m., 3:15 p.m., 5:15 p.m., and 8:30 p.m.

Aircrafts
Tourists can use the Macau International Airport for travelling to several destinations in the region on direct flights or catch connecting flights to different portsof Asia, Europe or America. The airport is located on Taipa Island and is 15 minutes away from the Macau Ferry Terminal, 20 minutes from the Barrier Gate and only 10 minutes away from the COTAI Frontier Post. Air Macau counters are located at the Airport (Departures - 2nd floor) and 398 Alameda Dr. Carlos d'Assumpção, R/C, Macau. There are approximately a dozen and a half companies flying to and from Macau, connecting to several cities in Mainland China, Taiwan, Korea and Southeast Asia. Transportation Service
All major hotels provide pick-up service which can be booked in advance or arranged on arrival.

Taxis are air-conditioned and inexpensive, they are freely available at the taxi station outside the Airport. There will be a surcharge of five patacas and each piece of luggage carried in the trunk will cost three patacas.

The Airport bus (AP1) is also available outside the terminal.

  

By Sea

 

Hong Kong has many facilities for Macau-bound travelers. The main sea terminal and heliport are located in Shun Tak Center, on the waterfront West of Central District on Hong Kong Island. It is above Sheung Wan MTR station (Mass Transit Railway) and next to a terminus for buses and minibuses from many parts of Hong Kong, including the A2 Airbus from the airport. The terminal has passenger wharves and helipad, booking offices for current and advance sailings and flights, reservation offices of Macau hotels and travel agents, a branch of China Travel Service, and a Macau Government Tourist Office Information Counter.

The following public transportation from Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok International Airport to Macau-Hong Kong Ferry Terminal is available:

Airport Express
First, take the Airport Express to the Hong Kong Station in Central.
Fare: HK$100 (Single Trip)
Frequency: Every 12 minutes
Journey Time: 24 minutes
Operating Hours: 5:54 AM - 00:48 AM

Then, take a taxi to the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal at Sheung Wan.
Fare: HK$15-20
Journey Time: 10-15 minutes

Public Bus No. A11 (air-conditioned)
Passenger should get off at the third stop after departing the airport, press the bell when "Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal" is announced.

Operating Hours: 06:10 AM - 00:30 AM
Frequency: Every 20 minutes
Journey Time: 30-40 minutes

Taxi
Fare: HK$350-400
Journey Time: 30 minutes

The China Ferry Terminal is located on the Tsimshatsui waterfront alongside Harbour City, on the Kowloon side of the harbour. It is used for Catamaran sailings to and from Macau, and is convenient for visitors staying in Tsimshatsui hotels. There are booking offices for current and advance sailings.

The Macau Ferry Terminal and heliport is situated in the Outer Harbour, close to the New Yaohan Department Store. It contains booking offices for sailings and flights to Hong Kong, travel agencies, restaurants and duty-free shops selling alcohol and cigarettes which are cheaper than in Hong Kong, as well as local cookies and other delicacies.

Passengers are advised to be at the terminal at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time, in order to complete immigration formalities.

To and from Hong Kong

Tourists can find quite a number of jetfoils, Catamarans and ferries available, run by TurboJET, First Ferry and the Cotai Strip CotaiJet™ .

TurboJET
Journeys will take one hour from Hong Kong to Macau and vice versa operating almost 24 hours. Drinks and snacks are available on board. The ticket prices range from HK$142 in Economy class on weekdays day service to HK$176 Economy class for night service. Tickets in Super class range from HK$244 to HK$275, VIP cabins for 4 to 6 persons are available at prices from HK$976 to HK$1,650. Trips are made between the Hong Kong Ferry Terminal (located in the Shun Tak Center at Sheung Wan) and the Macau Ferry Terminal (located in the Outer Harbour). First Ferry
Catamarans from the First Ferry offer roundtrip sailings to and from Macau and Kowloon, arriving at the China (HK) Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui. The journey takes about 60-75 minutes. Standby
In the Shun Tak Center and Macau Ferry Terminal, there are special lines for standby passengers who want to leave earlier than their ticketed sailings. Except for holidays and weekends, there is a good chance of getting a seat.

In Hong Kong and Macau, seats are allocated after check-in and immigration.

Cross Boundary Passenger Ferry Terminal
The "Cross Boundary Passenger Ferry Terminal" project provides deluxe passenger ferry service linking Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and Pearl River Delta region. A new brand "TurboJET Sea Express" runs the new service routes between HKIA, Shenzhen and Macau SAR.

Passengers can transit into or out of the Pearl River Delta region via HKIA without the need to go through HK Customs and Immigration formalities and also without the hassle of carrying their luggage to the ferry terminal. To and from Shenzhen

The Yuet Tung Shipping Co. offers a ferry service departing from Macau (at the end of Av. Almeida Ribeiro, Rua das Lorchas, near the Master Hotel, Pier 14) at 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m and 8:15 p.m. Tickets cost MOP$129 for adults and MOP$78 for children. Passengers departing from She Kou (Shenzhen) can travel at 8:15 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 3:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The trip takes about one hour and twenty minutes. Please call (853) 2857 4478 for detail.

TurboJET's service also extends to carrying passengers to and from Shenzhen. The company offers trips between Macau and Shenzhen Fu Yong Ferry Terminal (09:45a.m., 10:45 a.m.*, 12:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. departing from Macau; 10:30 a.m.*, 1:30 p.m.and 5:30 p.m. departing from Shenzhen). By Land

There are two gateways available, the Barrier Gate and the COTAI Frontier Post. The Barrier Gate operates from 7:00 AM to midnight. The COTAI Frontier Post at the Taipa-Coloane Reclaimed Area operates from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

To and from major cities in Grangdong Province, mainland China
The Kee Kwan Motor Road Co. offers an air-conditioned bus service between Macau and major cities in Guangdong Province during 7:15 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Buses depart from the bus stop near the Master Hotel (at the end of Av. Almeida Ribeiro and Rua das Lorchas).  Tel: (853) 2893 3888.

  

Passports and visas

All visitors must hold a passport or a valid travel document. Please note that the validity of these documents must not be less than 30 days since the day you enter Macau.

If travel arrangements are made through an agent, the visa processing is handled by Macau tour operators.

A.Visas are required by all visitors except:

a) Residents of Macau;

b) Nationals of Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cape Verde, Croatia, Czech, Cyprus, Denmark, Dominica, Egypt, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mali, Malta, Mongolia, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Tanzania and the United Kingdom(6 months) for a stay up to 90 days;

c) Nationals of Australia, Canada, Chile, India, Indonesia, Kiribati, Liechtenstein, Malaysia, Mexico, Monaco, Namibia, New Zealand, Philippines, Samoa, Seychelles, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, the United States of America and Uruguay for a stay up to 30 days;

d) Nationals of China with valid Macau entry/depart documents, including residents of Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and overseas Chinese for a stay of up to 30 days;

e) The "Hong Kong Identity Card" (with symbol “*”, “***” or “R”),  "Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card" or "Hong Kong Reentry Permit" holders may stay in Macau for a maximum period of one year.

f) Holders of Diplomatic Passport or "Laissez Passer" issued by the United Nations.

g) Holders of Consulate/Diplomatic documents issued by the Macau SAR or Hong Kong SAR.

B.Visas can be obtained from the Immigration Services through Embassies/Consulates of the PRC and should be used within the validity, the visa is expired after the valid date.

C.Visas are also available on arrival in Macau at the Immigration Services for a period of 30 days.

There are three types:

Individual - MOP$100, for individual traveller for a single stay of up to 30 days in Macau, children under 12 years of age pay MOP$50.

Family - MOP$200 for couples, husband traveling with wife and or children (under 12 years of age) of same surname or on proof of their relationship.

Group - MOP$50 per person for bonafide groups of 10 or more and children aged 12 or under.

For those who want to travel to mainland China, visas may be obtained at any of the China Travel Service (CTS) offices counters in Macau (the main branch is located at Rua de Nagazaki, 35 ?tel.853-2870 0888) or at the Gongbei Immigration and Customs (after the Border Gate) .

Portuguese passport holders who need the consulate's assistance may go to the Portuguese Consulate located at Rua Pedro Nolasco da Silva, 45, or call Tel: (853) 2835 6660/1/2 or fax: (853) 2835 6658.

Customs

On arrival

Visitors are usually subject only to routine inspections. The importation of firearms without special permission is not allowed as well as other illegal and dangerous items. Drug trafficking is punished by law!

Other items are not restricted nor subject to the importation duties, providing they are carried in reasonable quantities and contents.

On departure

There are no export duties in Macau: antiques, gold, jewelry, radios and cameras among other items are duty free articles.

However, Hong Kong SAR customs authorities will allow visitors, aged 18 or above, one litre of alcoholic liquor and 60 cigarettes or 15 cigars or 75 grammes of other manufactured tobacco into the Hong Kong SAR duty free. Visitors holding Hong Kong Identity Cards must have spent 24 hours or longer outside Hong Kong in order to be qualified for the above duty-free concessions.
