Sanya, a
coastal tourism city with the tropical scenery,
is like a pearl dotted about the green jade, Hainan Island.
Sanya is located at the southernmost
tip of Hainan Island on Lat.
It belongs to the typical oceanic tropical monsoon climate. Its
annual average temperature is 25. 4 centigrade. In July, the hottest
month, its average temperature is 28 centigrade and in January,
the coldest one, 21 centigrade. It is always called "WINTER
PALACE. "
Sanya has five kinds of treasure, sea,
sand, air, green and sunshine.
The sea is fade-like, the sand rouge-like, the bay rainbow-like
and the sight picturesque, which makes sanya win such a fame as
"a place better than Hawaii though not Hawaii. "
Sanya has s long history. There are
famous places of
scenic beauty
and historical interest such as the ying wan pagoda built in the
first year of the Qing Dynasty(1851), the word" 寿"(Longevity)
on a monument which was written by the Empress Dowager Ci xi,
the Remotest Corner of the Earth and the Cape of the sea where
the sky can't be told from the sea in color, the Turn- round Deer
with a myth on Love affair, Da donghai(sea) and xiao donghai(sea),
fine places for swimming in winter, Ya long Bay and Sanya Bay
with fame of "Hawaii in the east", the major and minor
Caves with a wonder of the sea and mountains, the pen-dropping
Cave, on the top of which a fairy pen is being hung high, the
Eastern Island and the western Island like two turtles floating
on the waves, in addition, the silent coconut gardens, the customs
of the Li, Miao and Hui nationalities.
Sanya is rich in the resources of the
sea and the
topical plant
Treasured seafood such as "Sanya Three Delicacies (sea cucumber,
shark's fin and abalone), sea- snakes and jelly fish can be served.
Tropical fruits like Lychee, gui yuan, pineapple, Jack-fruit,
mango and bananas can be tasted.
Getting
There
There
is only one real option for the international visitor - come
by plane. The
international code for Sanya Phoenix International Airport is
SYX.
Watch
out for direct flights
from Europe, since the situation is changing all the time. For example,
there is now a flight from Moscow direct to Sanya every 10 days or
so.
Currently,
however, the best option is to
transit through any major Chinese airport: Beijing,
Shanghai, Guangzhou (Canton), Shenzhen... and many others, since Sanya
is an important domestic holiday destination and there are lots of
flights in and out each day. There is also a midday plane from Hong
Kong which could be useful for some international
connections.
If
that is inconvenient, you could always get the regular
bus
from Hong Kong to Shenzhen Airport, but allow at least two hours for
this journey since there are often border queues and traffic jams are
possible too. This is a good
option if you need a
visa, because you can get one at the border in just 15-20 minutes
during working hours, but remember that the visa office shuts for
lunch!
Both
Hong Kong and Shenzhen Airports have well marked travel
desks where bus and flight tickets can be arranged. The Hong Kong travel desk can also
help you make your visa application, which includes taking your photo
if you need one.
Visitors
from most nations do not need to obtain an advance
visa to visit Hong Kong, but this is usually necessary for
visits to China. In theory,
some Chinese airports including Sanya will give you an arrival
visa, but DO NOT rely on this since it appears that the
situation in practice is different. This
said, the Shenzhen border visa system definitely works.
There
are no ferries
to Sanya at the moment, but this may change in a year or so, since work
is progressing on a modern cruise ship and ferry terminal that will be
an important addition to Sanya's facilities.
Similarly,
there are no trains
to Sanya either, but work has already begun on a fast link to Haikou
(the capital of Hainan, in the north of the island), which will
guarantee connections with the rest of the Chinese rail
system.
There
are many planes, ferries and trains to Haikou,
which is useful, although you need to allow a further 3 hours by
car/taxi from Haikou to Sanya or 4 hours by direct coach (5 hours by
bus). This alternative is not
really recommended unless, of course, you want to visit the Haikou area
before moving onto Sanya.
