Tai'an
City is located at the southern foot of Mount Tai in
central Shandong Province. To its north is jinan, the provincial
capital, to the south is Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius, to the east
is Zibo, famous for its porcelain, and to the west is the Yellow River.
The city covers 7,762 square kilometers, and has a population of 5.386
million, with 374,000 being the urban population in Tai'an.
Located
in the continental monsoon region in the warm temperate zone, its
average temperature in July, the hottest month, is 26.4 degrees
centigrade below zero. Its average annual rainful is 697 millimeters.
Mount Taishan rises 1,545 meters above sea level and features a typical
alpine climate. The temprature at typital alpine climate. The
temprature at the summit is usually 7 to 8 degrees centigrade lower
than that at the foot of the mountain all year round. The average
annual rainfall on the mountain is 1,106 millimeters.
As
an important birthplace of the ancient civilization of Chinese nation,
Tai'an is noted for Dawenkou Cultural Site, dating from the period of
transition from the matriarchal society to the patriarchal society,
6000 years ago.
Tai'an is an outstanding tourist
city. Mount Taishan has been listed as a world natural and cultural
heritage site, and its scenic sports attract more than 4.3 million
domestic and overseas tourists every year.
The
name Tai'an is derived from an archaism that means the whole nation is
stable if Tai'an is peaceful. So, Tai'an implies that the country is
prosperous and the people are at peace.
Tai'an
is an exemplary state hygientic city. The old downtown area and the
section at the foot of Mount Tai are in perfect harmony.
Tai'an
has four institutions of higher learning with high reputations
throughout China. Three research fellows working for the Chinese
Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering are from
Tai'an.
Tai'an has become an important
communation hub from south to north because it is the place where the
Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Beijing-Shanghai Expressway and
Beijing-Fuzhou national highway meet.
As a main producer of plaster
stone, natural sulfur and granite, its plaster stone reserve ranks
first in Asia. Tai'shan granite has been eulogized as being as stable
and heavy as Mount Tai. So, the being as stable and heavy as Mount Tai.
So, the granite used for paving Tiananmen Square and many important
building comes from Tai'an.
Tai'an has a
traditional advantage in developing the industries of mechanial and
electrical products of mechanical and electrical products, textiles,
chemicals, building, materials, coal, power and foodstuffs.Its
crosslinked eletric cables, high-tension switches, diesel engines,
gauges, hemp textile goods, glass fiber and series liquor occupy
certain shares of the domestic market.
Taishan
petroleum, Taishan tourism, Luneng Taishan and Lurun have stocks listed
on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets.
The
Taishan International Mountain-Climbing Festival is held in the first
ten days of September every year, serving as a bridge linking local
people with friends from all over the world.
